On 2nd thought, I’m finding it hard to get behind a holiday where a bunch of scrappy rebels defeated a vast empire for independence.

In all honesty, I’m a little impressed we don’t see this more often. With the increasing temptation that staffers want to show reporters or their friends that they are “in the know” coupled with the instant gratification that is social networking this could lead to people saying divulging aspects of the job that they shouldn’t.

I read this rumor late last night and the more I think about it, the less I think it’s all that viable for several reasons, namely:

1) Apple hasn’t expressed any serious interest in social networking. There is a lot of potential in products like iWeb, iPhoto and MobileMe, but they’ve only just scratched the surface. And if you follow the company’s history, they usually purchase smaller companies with far less visibility and co-opt their functions to make a product uniquely Apple or come up with their own version of a popular service.

2) Apple prefers their systems closed, while Twitter is more open to user customization. The very thought of releasing a product’s API would likely make the folks in Cupertino soil themselves. They like to be in complete control of what they produce leaving users to make some very slight appearance alterations. In part, that makes a lot of sense since a good deal of Apple’s appear is based in it’s iconic look. But I suspect a lot of it is that they think they’ve done all the heavy lifting with product deisgn and don’t want anyone screwing with it once they’re done with it.

3) Twitter has no reason to sell. Twitter is one of the fastest growing sites in terms of traffic on the net and it’s estimated value is going up just as fast. It would simply be dumb to sell the company now when it’s all but guaranteed to see its value increase over the next two years.
