The Hill’s blog report ran a story on Rep. Michele Bachmann and co-sponsor Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) who have submitted a bill that would dramatically scale back the questions asked by the Census to include only,
…four questions: Name, contact information, date of response, and number of people living or staying at the same address.
The census, which has been one of the pet causes Bachmann has embraced in recent weeks, is part of an effort to keep the government from using the data for nefarious purposes. According to recent statements she’s made to reporters and cable news outlets, she believes the information gathered would be used by groups like ACORN or the Obama administration to oppress their political enemies, both literally and figuratively.
Bachmann’s remarks in recent weeks have been so over the top they drew the ire of her Republican colleges, who publicly rebuked her call for an outright boycott of the census. Bachmann, though has gone undeterred, calling for an end to federal funding for groups who have been accused of a crime to calling for direct investigations into ACORN for voter intimidation.
Theoretically, if passed, the reduction in questions could have a profound effect on services and research institutions that rely on the data collected from the census to make funding decisions, grant requests, decisions regarding school locations, etc.
So far, neither Bachmann or Poie have made a public comment on the proposed legislation.
